TOMBSTONES OF GENERAL GEORGE GORDON MEADE & FAMILY - Laurel Hill Cemetery, Philadelphia, PA
Today's tombstones are of General George Meade and his family. General Meade was the commander of the Army of the Potomac at Gettysburg and it was he who soundly defeated the famous General Robert E. Lee at that pivotal Civil War battle. Notice both the head and foot stones for General Meade, his wife and daughters, with the General's initials clearly legible on his foot stone. The graves are clearly defined and you know pretty much exactly where the individuals are buried. The graves overlook the Schuylkill River - a beautiful view that the Meade family must have enjoyed. General Meade's victory definitely turned the tide of the War. Lee's boys were beaten badly and morale was very low as many men were lost. You can understand President Lincoln's disdain that Meade did not pursue Lee and allowed him to escape Pennsylvania and make it back to Virginia. Had Meade pursued Lee the War might have been concluded earlier. Guess we will never know for sure.
